How does hearing loss work?

hearing loss
Aaron H asked:

It’s an odd question, but what I mean is:

Is it a gradual loss of being able to hear certain frequencies, causing the clicks in speech etc. to become less obvious. Until one day you can hear hardly any frequencies so you’re basically deaf.

Or is it a gradual loss of sound as a whole just getting quieter? So you can hear all frequencies, but everything’s quieter. . .until you cannot hear anything at all?

I really don’t have the money or insurance but I constantly find myself saying “huh” and “what”. I think it’s because people mumble, hubby thinks it might be hearing loss. Is there a way I can check my hearing at home?

My grandma just go a hearing aid about 2 weeks ago. She has a Beltone hearing aid. She wears two. But when I talk to her she doesn’t even hear me if I don’t say something loud first. Also she thinks the backgroung noise is too loud, but she’s not sure. How loud should it be?
I know this is a hard question to answer, but I’d appreciate your input.

Dustin Y asked:

My hearing has been going down for years and I want to be tested and purchase two hearing aids. Of course, they vary in price quite a bit.

How much would the test(s) cost for a hearing aid? I imagine an audiogram is one of the tests performed. A rough estimate is fine. Most audiologists won’t give me a straight answer when I ask…I guess they want to surprise me with a huge bill, lol.
