Does a mother smoking while pregnant cause hearing loss in her baby? Directly, no. However, numerous studies have linked maternal smoking to low birth weight and prematurity, and both of those can be linked to hearing loss. Also, some women who smoke during pregnancy also drink alcohol during pregnancy, and fetal exposure to alcohol has been shown to be linked with hearing loss. No studies that I know of have linked maternal smoking to hearing loss without the co-occurring factors of low birth weight, prematurity, or maternal alcohol consumption.

Post-natal exposure to tobacco smoke has been correlated with much higher rates of middle ear infections in children, which causes temporary (and occasionally permanent) hearing loss, but not the type that you have.

So unless you were premature or a small baby, the smoking probably has nothing to do with your hearing loss. Kim

i don't know what the medical evidence is, i know there must be some as experts are always saying so, but from my own experience id say yes. i am a mum of 3 and smoked on and off through out all of my pregnancy's. my 2 boys both have trouble with middle ear infections and have both had to have grommets put in, so far my daughter doesn't seem to be showing any signs of these problems and i stopped smoking for 4months while i was pregnant with her. a friend of mine also has 2boys, 1 with grommets 1 without, she smoked through both her pregnancy's but my sister who smoked through her daughters has no problems what so ever.
hope this helps lathamemma

The research I found doesn't indicate nerve damage issues linked to maternal smoking during pregnancy. The studies I found indicates that hearing related cognitive deficits are found. Meaning the child can't differentiate noises. So in a noisy environment they can't distinguish one voice from background noise. Below is a link that I found:
--ned071806.php

Best of luck. wait and see

This is what one site says :

Some studies have shown that smoking during pregnancy may harm the child's mental development and behaviour, leading to a short attention span and hyperactivity. Other research shows that certain birth defects may be more common in babies whose mother smoked during pregnancy. For example, one study showed that mothers who smoked 20 or more cigarettes per day were more than twice as likely to have babies born with a cleft lip and/or palate. The same researchers also found that infants were eight times as likely to have a cleft lip and/or palate if they were genetically predisposed and if their mother smoked.

Finally, the further into pregnancy a woman smokes, the greater her risk of complications. For example, if a pregnant woman stops smoking during the first half of her pregnancy, her baby will most likely be born a normal weight. If she continues to smoke throughout the pregnancy, she'll probably have a low-birthweight baby

Which i find to be a load of crap.
my doctor told me that smoking during pregnancy isnt as bad as you think as long as you dont smoke 1-2 packs a day. my doctor gave me the ok (so did my best friends doctor and she smoked through all 3 of her pregnancies and her kids are so healthy) to smoke only 1-2 cigs a day!!!! im not kidding, just one to two cigs a day. my doctor told me that quitting completely would put so much stress on me and the baby, that it could potentially harm the baby. talk with your doctor, but ive heard so many doctors giving the ok to smoke one to two cigs a day, just dont be smoking a whole pack!!
my son when he was born was the healthest baby in the nursery and i did what my doctor recommended, smoked one to two cigs a day.

please dont listen to all these women who are going to give you the third degree for smoking while pregnant, they've obvisouly never been addicted to anything, or know anything about smoking while pregnant... where is their degree in medicine? not saying i have one, but ive contacted and spoke with over 25 doctors about smoking when pregnant.

the say that you will deliever a preterm/low weight baby? i went full term, and i had a healthy 7lb 3oz baby... and he is still as healthy as can be at 4months old (weighing 20lbs... which is from what the doc says, a great weight for him... )

and for all these girls saying that the babies were born with problems, whats to say that it had anything to do with smoking? there could have been something else that cause those disabilities, it could have even been genetic... so dont sit there and link all these problems to smoking, you dont have a medical degree! andrew's mommy

It could be, smoking during a pregnancy can cause many sorts of problems, smoking during a pregnancy is one of the worst things to do! It effects the baby's weight and size, (usually mothers who smoke during a pregnancy can expect premature birth) the lung development and the baby's brain function. Liz

I don't know about total hearing loss. But it's not that far fetched. Smoke irritates the baby's (as well as any other person's) throat and ears, which could give them problems. And maybe down the road, hearing loss could be a result of those problems.

Just smoke outside. Mafia

Well it deprives the baby of oxygen so it does a lot of damage to the whole baby. You are taking a big risk if you smoke while pregnant. The poor child will have to suffer for the rest of his/her life from your bad habit. honey

I don't think I've ever heard of hearing loss being due from smoking while you're pregnant. I know the baby can have low birth weight and it can cause the mom to go into pre-term labor and it increases the chance of miscarriage in the first 12 weeks but no, there have never been any documented studies stating that smoking causes hearing loss. ♥Kay1134♥
