Can I cause my baby to have hearing loss while in the womb?
I had my baby boy 12/19! asked:
Hello! I’m 17 weeks pregnant and a professional drummer. I will be going on tour for 2 weeks in Europe. So, I will be 18 and 19 weeks pregnant. I am nervous about all the noise from the drums (especially the snare drum that is the drum closest to my stomach) can cause hearing loss for my unborn child.
Tell me your thoughts on this. I will not be playing more than 30 minutes at a time.

From the studies I have done on child development yes you can - check with your doctor to be absolutely sure.

The baby is in your uterus, protected by the amniotic sac, and basically under water. He will not suffer hearing loss, the most the baby will hear is dull vibrations.

Even in the mother’s uterus the hearing of the foetus is vulnerable to noise. If a pregnant woman spends time in excessive noise she risks that her baby will be born with noise-induced hearing loss. The hearing of the foetus is fully developed 20 weeks after conception and is unprotected

I have known a ton of pregnant musicians. None of their babies ever had hearing loss, even from the loudest guitars, drums, pipe organ, etc. I stopped performing in my 2nd trimester (I’m not a full-time musician) - but had exposed my daughter to some pretty loud music - with no ill effects. I believe the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby (and enters the ear canal) protects the ear drum from vibrating too much - thus protecting against damage and hearing loss.

I’m not positive but I think it can be bad. My husband is in a rock band. While pregnant, I went to a rehersal. It was soo loud! I was a bit worried & did not go again while pregnant. Ecspecially if you are on tour, that would be exposing your baby to alot. And I think It would probably be very loud from where you are? Ask you doc & good luck! PS- Me personally, I would not want to take that chance!
