Can sudden loss of hearing make someone go insane?

hearing loss
Raquel asked:

Say someone has perfect hearing since they were a baby, and then later on in life they experience some terrible accident that makes them go deaf. Would this person have a bigger chance of going insane because of the huge change? What if this person had a sever case of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)? Would that increase the chance of that person going crazy?
ha I’m not planning on making anyone deaf! I was just curious….I didn’t know this question would spark so much suspicion.

Well.. I don’t know how it could increase the chances of them going crazy.. However they may get stressed out more; a increased chance of geting stressed. IknowThePiecesFit!

I’d say most definitely! Hearing loss is a very traumatic event for people who have always had it. It’s not only scary but overwhelming to think about not ever being able to hear again.

Luckily, society has made huge strides in recent years to both accommodate and help those people. Unfortunately it does happen, and is very difficult to overcome at first, but I honestly believe that we were made to mentally overcome our difficulties and become stronger because of it:) M W

Sudden loss of hearing can be due to different things, but it wouldn’t make them go insane. OCD is a different issue and it usually is due to some anxiety as well. So if the person is very anxious, the loss of hearing can make them more anxious, but hopefully not to the extreme of going insane. S E

No, losing your hearing would not cause insanity. Insanity would be caused by a preexisting mental illness. It might increase the chances, but really not likely.
It might also worsen their OCD. It all depends on the person. P.J.

I would have to say that it would definitly make one go insane faster because they have lost something that they used to take for granted, and now they’re going to wish that they hadn’t, making them go crazy with guilt and such. Houffer777

    Let us rephrase the question.

What if you were planing to make someone deaf for whatever insane reason but out of “compassion” or fear that this person will harm you in their moment of insanity, you did not want them to become insane as well as deaf?

That in itself is insane.Visit a psychologist.Talking helps more then you know. Dark Knight
