I think of ear wax, ear infections and the like as the first place to look. While you are at the doctors about that see if there is any other reason for hearing loss. The next step might be an ear trumpet. There is enough stigma to having one of those that a hearing aid might be preferrable!

first thing to do is get her to a hearing doctor to find out if it is serious
less serious problem could be a build up of wax in the ear it gets compacted and forms a plug try warm (not hot just warm bottle in hand or water) almond oil couple of times a day in ear pop some cotton wool in to stop it running out the idea is it will slowly loosen the wax to come out on its own also the doctor may seringe it out for you
as for the shouting thing make sure she knows you are talking to her get her attention before speaking face her so she can lip read (to a degree)cut down other noises first ie tv radio all speaking at once
my hearing is bad and if i dont have my aid these things help me

Old wives' tales are not the answer. You need to first determine the reason for the hearing loss. If a hearing aid is the solution, there are organizations that assist with this. Some are even provided free of charge to qualifying individuals. In the meantime, make sure whenever you speak to her that you are standing in front of her, facing her. And speak clearly. Consider other sounds in the room (television, other conversations, etc.). She might have a hard time isolating the voice speaking to her. And don't worry about what other people think. If you have to shout at her to hear you, then raise the roof until you can get her some help.

Hmmmm. I smell a rat. You could just check she hasn't got a massive build up of ear wax, or an infection first.Get the doctor to check her out just in case it is something treatable. You could always use a pen and paper, or how about using the PC to communicate?
