Certainly, but it depends on the department requirement he is applying for. Check that out to be sure before waisting his time on classes. sgt524

I was in the CJ program, yes, they will test him through and through physically as they do with any potential law enforcement candidate, now there are significant options for him with a cj degree, it's a growing trend, people are doing privatazion within teh field of CJ, he could be given an adminstrative type position, security consulting etc.. it isnt going to be a loss or in vain if he goes to school, we need education but he will not be on the top of the list for department, every state has mandates call your state police department and discuss teh hearing infirmity with them and see what they advise defenseonly

Yes in almost every situation. It would also not be safe to not have good hearing and be in such a job. Don't listen to criminal justice schools as they will tell you yes its OK but find out from a state law enforcement academy or the targeted potenital employer to see what the standards are. I have never heard of someone with that much hearing loss who could qualify for civil service police jobs. Colleges will tell you yes just to get students in and collecting tuition but you need to know for sure. There are however, good LE jobs that are not street police, such as probation and parole which is a gun carrying law enforcement officer who is usually paid better, treated better and can advance to superivsory positions quicker. Tom W

It can definitely prohibit him. I recommend that he check out the hearing requirements prior to applying. Reason being, a lot of departments schedule their physicals near the end of the hiring process. this can be a year or more down the road, depending on the size of the agency. If there is a device available to help his particular affliction, I certainly recommend it. No offense intended, but I know I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing my partner couldn't hear what could be going on around him/us.

Good luck to him though. Its a noble profession, and I have no doubt that if he does get picked up, he will find it very rewarding. M_MEEKER

I would think that this would be a disqualifier as I know my department gave you a hearing and eye test. however seeing (no pun intended) as how they allowed you to join if you corrected the vision with glasses then perhaps a hearing aid would allow him to continue on.
Only the department would be able to answer that question. Quasimodo1957
