If your Gran has already been tested in the NHS and maybe has already been given an aid then going private will not necessarily make things better. As to how much it will cost that depends really on what the problem is. If her hearing has never been tested then that is the first step irrespective of whether you are going through the NHS or private. It is not like buying a car or a new cooker that you can go along and look, read some brochures or check on the internet. So once you have found out what the problem is private aids can be in the range £480 to £2500. There are more expensive ones but they are really specialised.

We bought my husband's 4 years ago in Denmark when the Euro to Dollar exchange was still favorable. Cost was $4000.00. We saved $3000.00 that way with hotel and airplane included. He needed very advanced ones as he has 70% hearing loss since birth. Right now I don't even want to know how much they would be...

My son is deaf & has just got some brilliant new digital hearing aids from the NHS but if you really want to go down the private route this article may help you. I looked into going private myself but with the NHS we get free batteries, tubing, they fix problems quickly & I don't have to worry about the cost.

You really don't want to buy one privately. Does your Gran have MediCare or some such health program? You can contact them and have them pick up most of the cost, then pay for the difference. It can be substantial.

I bet you could find one on eBay for $10, though. Ew.
