I have been diagnosed with Sudden Sensorineural hearing loss. On Prednisone now. Scared to death! Heard of it?
Paige asked:
I am scared to death that my hearing won’t return, and I will be stuck with the sound of a jet engine in my head! Dr. thinks it’s viral, but schedule an MRI to rule out a tumor. I would appreciate ANY information regarding this.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) which is treated with steroids within the first 2 weeks of the symptoms provides the best chance that some of the hearing may return. It is considered one of the most perplexing and controversial unsolved mysteries in otolaryngology. SHL has no universally accepted definition, but one useful definition is an idiopathic hearing loss of sensorineural origin. Viruses have long been suspected as causative agents in SHL (viral cochleitis). Other treatment regimens have included diuretics, anticoagulants, plasma expanders, and diatrizoate meglumine, or Hypaque, an intravenous contrast dye. SZO

Yes it does happen. Unfortunately there is no way to predict what will happen in your specific case. Just follow the Dr.’s orders and take your meds as prescribed. I am an audiologist and it amazes me how many people I see with a huge difference between their ears from a sudden loss 6 mos ago, a few years ago etc. They never went to a doctor for it. How can you not be concerned when you suddenly don’t hear?!? I mean seriously for anybody reading this if you suddenly can’t hear much out of one or both of your ears get to the ENT as fast as possible. Sudden SNHL is best treated with steroids in first 48 hours. And many Primary care physicians don’t recognize patients symptoms as sudden hearing loss and treat it as an ear infection with antibiotics and decongestants. 8162008
