Hey people
im 15 and im trying to decide what i want to be when im older. I was hoping to be a commercial airlines pilot. However, i have a hearing loss in both ears and i wear hearing aids. I can hear most things fine with them, and am not usually affected. Am i able to be a pilot under law?

Under current rules/laws you won’t be allowed to become a commercial pilot - it’s a safety issue that won’t be compromised at this time. Who knows? Perhaps in the future, there will be a relaxing of the rules/laws, along with better technology for hearing aids, but that’s wishful thinking and most likely doubtful.
However, you could still be associated with the airline industry even with your handicap: Management (makes as much and even more than pilots), IT services (great career and well paid), engineering (industrial, airfield, maintenance - good work and well paid), safety, culinary (non-American carriers), marketing (get passengers from the competition and receive bonus’ for your efforts), and customer service (good work with potential to move into management positions).
You could consider the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and NASA; both have outstanding career choices and they must hire folks with your condition into some jobs but not all (some of their jobs involve flying aircraft where communication is life-critical).
You could also become a Dept. of the Air Force civilian employee; they also must hire folks with disabilities but they take better care of their employees than the Army, Navy, and Marines do; plus you’ll be associating with pilots/navigators/UAV operators on a daily basis.
But hey, regardless of your disability, you can always find a great career that will accommodate you if you truly want it bad enough and are willing to work hard for it. Keep up your motivation, focus, and get the best education that you can, and you just might get the job/career you want in life. Nobody owes you a job, but, by working hard on your skills, you’ll improve your chances of getting hired over the slug.
