depends on what is causing the loss. you need to be checked out by a doctor. There are some things that you can do but there are other causes that are not treatable.

Is it a total hearing loss? Have you always had it? Have you been to the ear doctor and the audiologist to see what they can do for you?
I have a hearing loss. It is so profound on one ear that they do not even recommend a hearing aid and it will get worse. I have about a 40% loss in the other ear and I wear a hearing aid.
I cannot tell you how much wearing the hearing aid changed my life. I had gotten to the point that I was becoming a recluse. I was uncomfortable in groups because I could not hear what people were saying and had to ask people to repeat themselves constantly. I really had to concentrate at staff meeting so that I would at least get the gist of what people were saying. I did not like parties, or bars, or concerts because I could not hear everyone. Movies were frustrating to say the least. I knew that my friends and family were tired of always remembering to talk loud and to make sure I was looking at them. I never heard the punch line of jokes and so missed the reason everyone was laughing. On top of that I have tintinitus in the ear that does not have a hearing aid and so I constantly hear a sound like crickets. I did not realize it, but the doctor pointed out that I was developing a speech pattern that was indicative of a severe hearing loss.
There were scary parts too. I could not hear police and fire sirens if I had the radio turned up so I could hear that when driving. I live alone and could not tell if someone was in my house unless I was near the door. I did not hear fire alarms or doorbells. I could not hear the phone ring if I was laying on my good (?) ear. In otherwords, if I was in bed, someone could break in, or the house could be on fire, or one of my loved ones could be calling me on the phone and I would not hear them.
I got a hearing aid about four years ago. It is programmable so that I can access different programs for different situations. Unfortunately, it was very expensive ($2000). I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to start hearing again. I actually could hear birds for the first time in years. Staff meetings were no longer uncomfortable, I like going to concerts, or bars, or parties. I still use subtitles on my TV and at times ask for hearing impaired help in the movies, but the hearing aid vastly improved my quality of life.
I hope you hear me. If you have not seen an ear, nose, and throat doctor, get an appointment immediately. You could find out that new technology can improve your hearing. If not, the doctor will send you to an audiologist who will determine the extent of your loss and recommend hearing aids to help you.
I hope this helps you, as I felt lost and frustrated. This is the unseen handicap that people don’t understand or want to cope with.
