New gen iPod and hearing loss?

I was wondering if the new gen iPods have had the volume reduced so as to delay the hearing loss iPods were rumoured to cause. My friend received one for Christmas, and the volume is considerably lower than her old one.
I can’t find any studies or articles related to this subject.
