When your jaw pops or cracks, is the sound so loud that it leaves your ear ringing a bit and your hearing feeling muffled for a few minutes?

If so, you are experiencing a temporary threshold shift--in other words, a temporary hearing loss. It should get back to normal in a few minutes. I wouldn't expect this by itself to cause permanent hearing loss.

Hopefully the braces will realign your jaw and put an end to this annoying sound.

Funny things can happen when you grind, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.
