total hearing loss in one ear– is there any remedy?

hearing loss
kamalladdha asked:

My father, 83, has a total hearing loss in one ear. Someone suggested that digital hearing aids can remedy this. Will anyone throw light on what remedy can he go for to restore hearing in the affected ear. He is presently able to hear from the other ear.

Hearing loss can be caused by many things. The only way to know any possible solutions is to visit a doctor and get checked out.

If he shoved ear wax into the canal, it could seem like he has hearing loss just in that ear. Try some mineral oil.
Otherwise, it may very well be real hearing loss and he would need to go to a doctor.

    Hello
I am an CLinical audiologist practicing in bangalore.. i come across these problems regularly in my patients..
When hearing loss in an ear is more than 85% in an ear, fitting regular hearing aids are not an option, as the other ear being normal, it is difficult to find a suitable hearing aid which do not amplify too much and distort the signals..
There are other options like cROs, BAHA for these patients..
best way to know is get an assessment done by an audiologist who can advise you all the options..
SOmetimes when people commonly say total hearing loss, it may not real be total, it may be between 50-80% of heairng deficit, in which case hearing aids can be easily fitted. AUdiograms generally help us in making these decisions.
Find an audiologist in your city and discuss with him/her.
