When hearing loss in an ear is more than 85% in an ear, fitting regular hearing aids are not an option, as the other ear being normal, it is difficult to find a suitable hearing aid which do not amplify too much and distort the signals.. There are other options like cROs, BAHA for these patients.. best way to know is get an assessment done by an audiologist who can advise you all the options.. SOmetimes when people commonly say total hearing loss, it may not real be total, it may be between 50-80% of heairng deficit, in which case hearing aids can be easily fitted. Try some mineral oil. Otherwise, it may very well be real hearing loss and he would need to go to a doctor.
