What does a baby with a hearing problem sound like when they babble?

I’m starting to wonder if my 11 1/2 month old is hearing well. She looks at me when talk to her, but she just sounds so mumbly and doesn’t make many different sounds.

By the one year mark, your baby should be repeating sounds and words back to you. If she’s mumbling and not making many different sounds, you should think about taking her to a pediatrician and asking for a hearing evaluation. Good for you for spotting the problem! If very young children need hearing aids, the sooner they get them the better, so they can learn to communicate with other people. If they wait until they are school age, it becomes very difficult. old lady

my nephew is 2 1/2 and he still isnt talking very well he bables and bables and bables and every once in a while youll get a “dog” or… “truck” out of him.. but he definetely doesnt have any hearing issues because he does exactly what you tell him to.. if you say, wherre are your toes, hell show you. or go get that toy do this, wheres that. he does everything. so he hears well. i wouldnt be too concerned about it Landon’s Momma

Not all babies are “talking” by this stage. All babies develop at different rates. If she is looking at you when you speak then she is at least hearing some of what you are saying/doing. Do you think she understands what you are saying? Can she pick up a toy if you ask her to, or at least point to it. My twins were talking somewhat at a year….more so at two and exploded with language at about 27 months. Now at four …. they never seem to stop talking!
If you are concerend talk to your pediatrician about it. He/she may recommend a hearing test and may suggest that you have her evaluated. If there is a problem you want to catch it as early as possible. mouse_726
