Prednisone is for a sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) which would usually be something that is not fluctuating. There are a number of reasons why SSHL is speculated to occur but there is no sure cause or perfect treatment. Hearing can recover some without prednisone but there is some evidence that it can recover more with the medication in some cases. There is no guarantee there will be any recovery at all. If it’s fluctuating (especially fluctuating in the low pitches) then it may not be SSHL. Are you dizzy? Many times a fluctuating hearing loss is a sign of Meneire’s disease. Signs of Meneire’s include roaring tinnitus, spinning and nausea in episodes of a couple seconds. C
