Why do hearing aid batteries last only about a week, but other small batteries can last more than a year?

My wristwatch battery usually lasts over a year and the 10 year batteries in my home smoke alarms have made it over three years, so far. Is the very short life of hearing aid batteries because of planned obsolescence for greater sales?

Because it is an audio amplifier that is on all the time.

Hearing aids have a whole lot more to do than just make a second hand tick. They have to power up and amplifier, a receiver, a microphone, and in cases of digital hearing aids it has to power the digital chip and all the processes involved. You may also find that the more noise and input there is in your environment the more battery power is needed in order to power up the processors in the hearing aids and therefore, shorter battery life.
