I have a student with hearing loss, and I am on watch every day to be sure he has his aids in, that way I know he can hear me in class and get all the information he needs. I just found out one of my students has Asperger's, if I had known at the beginning of the year I could have applied strategies all year long to help me teach him, I'm applying them now but I wish I had known 7 months ago. I could have accomplished so much more with him. The more information I have about my students and how they learn or their difficulties the better I can serve them. The first example I can think of is that if the problem is sensorineural, a class discussion would be a nightmare, but that would not necessarily be the case for a conductive hearing loss. With hearing loses, the brain is sometimes sent mixed messages on what is said, making it difficult for the child to fully understand what he/she is supposed to do. Sometimes, if the hearing loss is major, the student is put into a different class so they can learn to develop better basic skills and learn to cope with their hearing loss.
